Training to become a teacher is one of the most rewarding decisions you can make. At Teach West London, we asked current trainees to share their advice and reflections. Their insights might be just what you need to feel ready to start your own journey.
More than just a qualification
A teacher training year with Teach West London isn’t just about getting your Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and/or your Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), it’s about growing into a confident, capable professional that’s ready to make a difference. Trainee Terry encourages, “engage fully with the programme and it will be transformative in how you see both young people and yourself in the world.”
With Teach West London’s school-based training, you’ll gain real classroom experience from the first week, learning by doing, supported every step of the way. Although the training year can be intense, every trainee agrees that it’s worth it. Trainee Lucy shares, “It is hard but worth it. Persevere and be resilient.”
Stay organised and prepared
Time management and planning are key to success. Planning ahead and staying on top of your work helps reduce stress and keeps you on track. Trainee Muna advises, “take everything in because it makes your life easier. Remember to have fun (and do your lesson plans on time!).” Trainee Caroline helpfully suggests, “be organised, adaptable and take care of yourself.” Teaching is demanding, but those demands become manageable when you approach the training with the right mindset. “Be organised. Take the programme seriously,” Trainee Britta offers.
Lean into the support around you
Teach West London gives you access to strong, ongoing support. You'll spend one day a week training at one of our two centres - Ada Lovelace CofE High School or Ealing Fields High School - both part of the top-performing Twyford CofE Academies Trust. Trainee Lauren recommends “Always ask questions on Mondays [your weekly training day]. Contribute too, it’ll make you a better teacher.” Trainee Riddhi’s top tip is to “try to build a strong support network with your fellow trainees, they can be a great source of support and advice.” From your mentor and Subject Lead to fellow trainees and the Teach West London team, you’re surrounded by people who want you to succeed.
Learn, reflect, grow.
Teacher training is a journey of personal and professional growth. Trainee Beth encourages future trainees to, “set good rhythms. Get as much support as you can while you have the opportunity to learn from feedback. Don't neglect reflection or take things personally.” Being reflective, proactive and open to feedback are must-haves. Trainee Kelly affirms, “If you put in the work, you will see results! Embrace everything that is thrown at you and manage your time well.” Be proactive, stay open to feedback, and don’t be afraid to reflect.
Sometimes, all you need is to hear that someone else took the leap and didn’t regret it. Trainee Harriet simply says.... “You'll love it!” If you’re passionate about education, eager to grow professionally and want to be part of a high-quality teacher training programme with strong support and real impact - then don’t wait.
